Striking faux amber brooch on a silver tone setting with six claws. The brooch is 44 x 39 mm ( 1-3/4" x 1-9/16) and the stone is 30 x 22 mm (1-3/16" x 7/8") and 9 mm (3/8") deep, faceted front and back.
It closes with a locking roll-over clasp, and the pin is made of brass. The brooch weighs 25 g and has no signature or markings.

I believe it is from the 40s or 50s, though it may be older. It's been in my possession for 25 years, gifted by an elderly family friend whose wife (the previous owner) had passed away a few years before.
It already had a patina when I got it, and now it has just a little more. I have never cleaned it with anything but a soft cloth, so the patina is totally natural.

So what is the stone? Well, it definitely isn't amber glass, it's a great deal softer than glass. It looks resinous, but lacks inclusions or air bubbles, and it failed the static electricity test -- so it doesn't seem to be genuine (fossilized) amber. My best guess is that it's an immature but natural amber-like resin.
