Description

This antique Art Nouveau era bisque pottery jar was made by Schafer & Vater during the early 1900s, featuring a cameo face of a lady that is known by collectors as "Egyptian Queen" or "Queen Nefertiti" .
This piece has the shape of a ginger jar, and was used as a hair receiver, with the lid having a central circular opening, gold trimmed and surrounded by a striated dome that leads to four faux jewels, 2 pink and two black, gilded and trimmed with green and pink beading. A turquoise shade covers the striations in front of the lid.
The cameo of the female face is beautifully designed with ornamental accents in her hair and around her head, and appears on the front and back of the jar.
The base is marked with the Schafer and Vater crown insignia and what appears to be 4947 and a 3 stamp. The lavender jasperware is hued with green and the condition is antique excellent, with only the characteristic undulations and light pitting characteristic of these antique handmade bisque porcelain pieces. Some wear to the gold trim.
Dimensions are 4 inches tall with a 12 inch central circumference (ie approx 6 inches diameter in the widest bulbous section of the jar) and rim diameter of 2.25 inches, and footed base diameter of 2.5 inches

The Schafer and Vater company was located at Volkstedt Rudolstadt, Thuringia, Germany, originating in 1896.
Hair receivers were popular vanity accessories with ladies of that period to store hair removed from their brushes & combs, which enhanced the buns and other bouffant hair styles that were fashionable during Victorian times.

Additional policies

My items are Vintage (20+ years) and so not new.
Normal wear is characteristic of vintage items. I attempt to describe items accurately and so any damage or obviously noticeable wear or flaws are clearly documented in my listing descriptions.

Glassware from the Art Deco-Depression era has characteristic air bubbles and what are known as "strawmarks". This is not considered damage, rather part of the documented manufacturing processes of that era.
Similarly, vintage handmade pottery, like jasperware, can have undulations, color variations and some minor pitting. This is a recognized part of the manufacturing process and not damage.
