Cathal is a Gaelic name composed of the elements cath "battle" and val "rule," hence "battle ruler."

Cathal stands 72” tall hand carved from a single piece of hard maple, she was created to compete in the Minnesota Renaissance festivals lowbow competition, she has an arrow shelf meant for right handed shooting (right hand draws the arrow), she pulls 45lbs at 29”. Like all my bows I’ve backed Cathal with silk to improve her lifespan and to increase her reliability. She’s been stained with a red undercoat and then restained with a deep ebony coat, I then hand rubbed the high points to give her an aged and slightly battle-scarred look, finally she was brought to a beautiful sheen with 3 coats of finishing wax. The silk backing was painted with a special iron paint which was then carefully rusted to give it a warm yet rough feel.

All my bows are completely unique creations, each one with a different character and feel. The use of only one piece of wood with the intricate carvings makes them stunning piece for show and display. However, my bows are completely functional and by the time Cathal ships she’ll of loosed many arrows.

Cathal longbow, fantasy styled functional archery sculpture, custom carved wood bow.
