Solid Birch rune gandr, measures 14 1/2", natural bark handle, woodburned twice with twenty-four rune Futharks and geometric patterns in a pleasing primitive style, not unlike Saami (Lappish) decorative patterns.

This solid Birch hardwood rune gandr has been woodburned with the complete Futhark burned into both sides: one "outgoing" (handle to end) for projecting might, the other "incoming" (from tip to handle) for raising might. The distinctive papery bark has been left on the handle to preserve more of the tree's living energy; this is slightly delicate in the case of birchbark and should be handled with care.

The rune-rows alternate with geometric patterns in a pleasing primitive style, similar to traditional Saami (Lappish) decorative patterns. The Birch is strongly associated with the Disir (female ancestor spirits,) the goddesses, and with all the sacred aspects of hearth and home. The words "Birch" and "book" share a common ancestry with the rune "Berkannan:" in Northern climes, the bark of this tree may have been used as paper. Birch twigs are used for cleansing rites to this day: observe the birch-twig whisks used in sauna rituals, and the construction of the traditional broom.

Gandr is finished with walnut oil, which permeates and conditions the hardwood to prevent cracking: this hardens the wood as it cures, making it more durable.

It is said that Freyja shared the art of seidhr with Odin, and that he in turn taught her the Runes: the combination of the naturally feminine Birch wood's innate energy with Odin's gift of rune wisdom perfectly embraces this frithful exchange... a powerful tool for rune-working and frith-weaving alike!
