Fossilized ammonite, silver framed matched halves; very old metal and wood Chinese beads; French wire earhooks.

Fascinating, simple, pretty. Fibonacci spiral totally visible.

I have had these beads since the early 1980s, and they were somewhere between vintage and antique then, so I think it's safe to call them antique now. The metal is hollow (thus lightweight) and stamped with raised designs; the wood discs I think were originally red, but have aged to a brown I think nicely complements the ammonite colors.

As I think you can see from the photos, ammonites, while they are obviously the same species, are as different as fingerprints. This is partly just how things are, but also, since they are fossils, dependent on how old they are, the conditions under which they were fossilized, and the degree of skill in cutting, polishing, etc. once they've been chosen to become jewelry. Even these 2-halves-halves-of the same-piece are subtly different.

Ammonites were not really a nautilus, but a different cephalopod with the same spiral shell ratio. They no longer exist except as fossils. For more info, check out my blog, http://ThoseBlueRememberedHills.blogspot.com

These earrings are on display locally, so the specific ones in the photo may have been sold. If that happens, I will make you a pair as similar as possible in terms of size, color, and markings, and using identical bead accents and ear wires.

These earrings should be fine under normal wearing conditions. I would, however, keep them outside car shoulder belts and away from animals and small children.
