Pyrography, writing with fire, is an ancient craft that was revived during the Victorian Era to decorate boxes and many useful items for the home.

This box is a rare find and has very beautiful detailing. Every exposed edge is embossed with the look of dentil molding. The lid (inside and outside) are embellished with a grape vine and leaf motif as well as the 4 exterior sides of the box. The original hardware (front clasp, side triangle hinges and small brads (nails) are still attached and in good working order). The lid is warped upward about 1/4", so the front clasp will not hold. The design on the outside of the box is somewhat faded. The inside of the lid shows how the box might have looked when it was new.

Research shows these boxes were used by people 100 years ago. This particular shape and size may have been used to store crackers, or other dry pantry items. The box measures 6 3/8" high x 6" wide x 6" deep.

It's a wonderful example of wood burning techniques and old hardware used in the early 1900's.
