This necklace has a pendant made from Elm wood which was "saved" (with the owners permission) from a log burning stove wood pile. I hope you will agree it would have been a shame to burn such a nice piece of wood. In England we call this a "burr", but I understand that in other parts of the world it is known as a "burl". The means it was from a part of the tree which was damaged, and when the tree repaired itself, this swirly patterned wood is created. It is the most sought after type of wood for it's interesting grain pattern.
The pendant is hand carved into a stylised "Earth Mother" design, similar to some neolithic stones which have been found in various parts of the world.
The pendant is hung from a plaited leather thong, with a metal clasp.
The wood is 7.7cm (3 inches) long, approximately 0.7cm (quarter of an inch) thick and 2.5cm (1 inch) wide. After carving, the wood was sanded very smooth and given several coats of Danish oil, to give a tactile, low lustre finish.
