This wonderful, large vintage book, Sailors and Their Ships: Seafaring Through the Ages by Charles Kervern (Odhams, 1964), is a colorful children's book chock full of stories, information, and illustrations. This is the first English edition of the 1962 book, and it includes hundreds of illustrations by J.J. Vaysierres, plus historical diagrams and photos of diverse items such as a Gaulish sword, types of lighthouses, a paddle steamer, and deep sea divers.

The book traces the history of sailing from the pre-Christian era through the 20th century (till 1960s). It seems to include science, history, and legend in equal measures.

The cover is pictorial laminated boards with colorful illustration of old sailing ships. The end papers have silhouettes of submarines and ships. The text includes a contents page, notable dates, and index.

This would be a wonderful book for a child (or adult) in love with the sea, and could also serve as great source material for an artist.

The book is in good condition. The cover has worn edges and some wear and tear at the spine, but the binding is still pretty tight. The pages are a little yellowed but still bright, with no tears or marks.

Size: 92 pp; 11 5/8 x 8 3/4 inches
