From the publisher's note:

"Ambrose Bierce was an angry young man who got angrier as he grew older. His strong talent was directed always by bitterness and despair. His wonderful stories were weird, cynical, shocking. His life was restless, his temper outrageous, and his death violent..." He served throughout the Civil War with bravery, he was badly wounded in the head, mostly led the life of a newspaper columnist, and at the age of 71 went off to Mexico to join the staff of revolutionary Pancho Villa, and was murdered or executed when he deserted Villa.
