An exquisite early Grand Tour cameo c.1820. The miniature cameo is a high quality portrait of a classical figure; representing the transience of life - a wonderful miniature memento mori brought back from the Grand Tour.

The fine plaster intaglio depicts a classical woman; sensually posed in draping ringlets and a gauzy classical costume. She gazes down at a large cross as she sits besides a human skull.

The cast is full of wonderful fine details and the play of light reveals all the beauty and sensitivity of the woman and the presence of the skull. The white of the plaster is contrasted by a gleaming gilt edging and is encased in a gold card case.

CONDITION ~ The piece is in excellent condition, especially given its age.
Strong and clean. No obvious defects.

DIMENSIONS
This is quite a large cameo for the time.
2 3/4 by 2 1/4 by 0.9 inches.
