Stunning wet felted tea cosy with courting penguins design.

This tea pot cozy has been seamlessly wet-felted (no sewing or knitting involved!) from white English wool fibre and coloured merino wool fibres.

Size:
Outside measurements - 12" wide x 9.75" tall
Inside measurements - 11" wide x 9.25" tall

I used English wool inside and merino outside, the English wool adds bulk and a slightly spongy character to the felt which is excellent for a tea pot cosy. Using merino fibre I 'drew' the penguins design on, filling in as I went. To represent sun shining on snow and ice between the penguins I felted white silk caps in those areas. I used golden tussah silk fibre for the penguins throats.

Both sides have a pair of courting penguins - each penguin is individual and slightly different from its fellows. The penguins on on side are tall and stately, on the other side shorter and plumper :)

As a finishing touch I blanket stitched around the bottom with black embroidery silk.

This piece took a lot of work and a fair long time to create, I could not be happier with how it has turned out. Definitely one of a kind and very unique!

Wool is a great natural insulator. Another benefit of the cosy being felted as firmly as it is, its pretty water repellant so tea sploshes can be blotted straight off.

Seamless felt pieces are formed by laying wool fibres to completely enclose a resist, carefully felting them and part way through cutting the felt to remove the resist. Once the resist is out the felt is really worked hard, its a very physical process with lots of rubbing, rolling, throwing, pummelling and stretching to harden the felt and 'encourage' it to take the shape you want.

I posted on my blog the process (with photos) of felting this piece if you are interested:

Easy to care for:
Wool felt is naturally dirt & odour repellant & doesnt require washing very often anyway.. If he does need a wash, I recomend handwashing. Although he is very well felted and not likely to shrink, you dont want to lose the definition of the sewn on eyes & ears or his curly lock hairdo, which is needlefelted onto his head - so stick with gentle handwashing in handwarm water & woolwash/shampoo. Rinse. Blot between 2 towels to remove excess water. Reshape & dry naturally (standing on a radiator works well - you must be sure that his head is dry all the way through).

Care leaflet will be included.
