PRICE REDUCED! Every nanny, apparently, from the late 1880s into the early 1910s, wore one of these German-made brooches. The stone is a goldstone, which is actually aventurine glass. The knobs on the end unscrew to reveal a needle holder wound in black and white thread. Thus, Nanny was prepared to mend any small rip or replace a button "on the spot"!

There are many shapes available for the stone, but every brooch seems to be of the same design: mounted on a cylindrical bar, with smooth knobs at each end and decorated with trefoil scrolls. The left hand knob unscrews to reveal a hollow tube, which has the original black and white thread and needle for the emergency repair. It is secured by a strong pin with C clasp. The German patent mark is on the back of the cylinder. Approximately 1 3/4" long. This is in excellent condition. What a wonderful sewing collectible!
