Every month, tons of books are discarded by libraries. Most of them end up in the landfill as hardcover books are not accepted for recycling. Some end up in our studio, where we repurpose then into notebooks and other products.

If you are wondering, the original text blocks end up as handmade paper or cellu-fiber, a natural insulation material. For new pages we try to use either industry leftover materials or recycled paper. Just that you know, the former is much preferred from an ecological point of view. Paper can not be re-cycled, only downcycled, meaning that the quality degrades with each cycle. Thus using leftover materials means less trees to be chopped down, less chemicals in the environment, more resources saved.

Studio.Tartuensis is a private museum and studio. Selling our products is a way for us to support the other activities - maintaining the machinery, research into printing history, and education programs for schools. It's mainly your purchases that enable us to preserve a piece of common cultural history. At www.tartuensis.com you can read all about the notebooks, about the people making them and the community that selling these products supports. Do pay us a visit!
