Vintage French Limoges Burley & Tyrrell White & Gold Porcelain Pitcher With Violets Circa 1890-1910. I discovered this treasure in 100 degree weather, while everyone else was either at the local pool or swimming in Lake Michigan.

The Company was founded in 1838 as "Burley + Company " and in 1871 they became "Burley & Tyrrell". They were a famous department Store located at 83+85 State Street in Chicago that specialized in porcelain china, pottery and glassware. Haviland China in Limoges, France was commissioned to make specialized Limoges pieces for this once famous Store. There are not many pieces remaining and this is definitely a Collector's piece.

This is an amazing piece of porcelain pitcher masterly decorated. It has a white background and a raised motif around neck and the bottom of the pitcher. The neck and the handle have raised relief scroll work. There is a gold sponge effect around the neck of the pitcher and on the handle. The flowers are violets in muted shades of purple, lavender with muted green leaves a beautiful combination.

The pitcher measures 6" high from the bottom to the top of the spout and 6 1/2" wide taken from the spout to the handle. I did discover a small inside chip, see photo # 3 , from the inside. looking at the chip from the outside I actually thought it was part of the raised scalloped motif, see photo# 4. In no way does this detract from the beauty of this piece. The pitcher can be used as a vase, placed on a shelf or used at your scheduled monthly Tea Party for your nieces and children.

I have to thank my past, of lying on the South Jersey beach accumulating mega freckles, now when the sun is high in the sky, I head for the local estate sales and what is ironic is all my competition is out sunning themselves!

I offer this unique piece to all you Limoges lovers. As a once very young future Limoges lover, my Mother and my Aunt Carol who taught all the children who luckily just happened to be in the station wagon that afternoon how to find treasures driving up and down Rt 9 in New Jersey, we all learned our mantra...."You can never be too thin or have too much Limoges" I still say Amen to that!

The moral of this listing is...it pays to stay out of the sun...Happy Collecting!
