This early Edwardian era edition of The Marble Faun is a delightfully decorative book, with its bright scarlet roses against a olive green cloth. It is a superb example of how the Arts and Craft style permeated American culture, even down to reprint houses like Grosset and Dunlap.

"The Marble Faun was Hawthorne's venture back into fiction after his stint as American Consul in London, and then a year as tourist in Italy with his wife, Sophia Peabody. He was inspired by Italy, and especially by the statue of a faun by Praxiteles.

The story is a romance with elements of the fantastic, the fabel and the gothic. It is a love sotry with four main characters, all having resemblences or sharing attributes of biblical characters , personages form Italian history. Thus Miriam, the beautiful painter, is compared to Eve, Beatrice Cenci, Cleopatra and LAdy Macbeth. Hilda - a total innocent - is likened to the Virgin Mary; Kenyon, who is a scultor, represent rational humanism; while finally, we have Donatello, the Count of Monte Beni - he is likened to Adam ... he seems to bear an uncanny resemblance to the Faun of Paxiteles ... could he be a descendant - a reincarnation of the Faun?
