This is a thick-walled 19th century New England style pantry box. The most unusual thing about it, however, is that the lid appears to have been used as a cutting surface. The inside of the lid has hundreds of very short indentations, while the top of the box has fewer but longer scratch and cut marks. It has a rich patina with some uneven aging. The lid has one major flaw, but the box is entirely sturdy. The base and lid are very solid. A fantastic piece of history.
