Christian Ethiopians have worn crosses made from coin silver for over 1600 years. They are made by using the lost wax casting process or cut directly from a Maria Teresa thalers. The oldest pieces tend to be those of the more plain Greek or Latin designs. This particular cross exhibits a worn a Greek design and was made with the lost wax casting technique.

Material for Coptic crosses varies from coin silver (about 80%) to a variety of mixed metals. During the 19th century the supply of silver became more readily available and designs more elaborate with symbols and patterns influenced by other religious groups. However, because these were made over such a long period of time it is hard to verify how much silver each cross contains.

You will receive the exact cross you see pictured here. The cross is strung on a strong, black woven cotton finished off with a adjustable knot for instant adornment.

This cross is indeed an antique piece and it’s condition reflects that. Worn edges and weathering are a product of time and use...not defects.

Size: approx 1.75 inches tall, 1.5 inches wide (43mm x 38mm)

Good silver content, takes a wonderful polish.
