Have you been to Chartres?

It’s perhaps the most beautiful of all the French medieval cathedrals. I once visited there, and walked the Labyrinth. Since then I wanted to do something with this enduring design-
to somehow make it my own.

I looked at what other people have done, but none of them really spoke to me. Either they were too mechanical, or too loose. Or the material or finish or size just wasn’t right for me.

So a few years ago I decided to make one out of clay. The idea sat on the back burner until the end of 2010, when I decided to finally do it. The piece was difficult to carve, and it's not easy to produce, but I’m quite happy with the results.

It seems to find just the right balance between precision and hand-made artistic expression.

Walking the labyrinth is a meditative process. Tracing it with your finger is even more personal. Everyone who holds the piece can’t help but trace the path.

I think you’ll find that it slows you down, and helps to bring you back to center.

It’s even more interesting to trace the path with your eyes closed. You can’t rush, or you’ll lose your place and have to start over. More than one person has suggested that it would be a great art piece for a blind person...

The labyrinth is surrounded by nine sides- the sacred number of completion and fulfillment.
It is about 12" x 12" x 5/8" thick. (About 30.5cm x 30.5cm x 16mm) It’s made from smooth white stoneware clay, and is quite substantial. It weighs about 4.5 pounds. (About 2 kilos.)

Each piece is hand made, and unique in the finishing and the glazing. You will feel and see the hand of the artist in every turn.

The glaze is one I call Sea Ice Blue. It’s hard to photograph, but I think you can get the idea from these shots. It’s a sort of blue-turquoise, like pictures you’ve seen of glacier ice. It's a little more green, and glossier and sharper than these pics show. Beautiful!

The glaze is deep and crackled, and almost looks like it’s wet, or still in motion. It breaks off of the high points, with white highlights from the smooth stoneware clay showing through. It pools in the low points.

The back of the piece is unglazed, and is marked in the clay dmhstudio.com, with a unique studio serial number.

The back will typically show process marks from the kiln shelves and the firing. In the final step, we smooth the back with diamond pads, and then apply a coat of wax. Handled with care, it won't scratch even your finest furniture.

This Labyrinth also comes with a black acrylic stand, which you can use for displaying your new piece on a shelf or table. It can also be mounted to the wall, using the supplied screws.

A Special Note To Our UK & Canada Friends

Because you asked, I do offer shipping to you via United States Postal Service. I know it might seem a little expensive, but that's the actual cost to me for the shipping in $USD.

So far USPS has been very reliable. The package is insured and has a tracking number.

Please be aware that your country will charge you additional import duty before you can pick the piece up ;^( Call them to find out what the tax will be.

(At least the exchange rate is working in your favor these days!)

Canada seems to take about 7 days to arrive, and a day or two to notify you that the package is ready for pick up or delivery.

The UK takes about 10 days to arrive, and it can languish in customs for up to an additional 5 to 10 days before they notify you. Sorry... but even with these hassles, I know that you'll love your new labyrinth!
