This antique glass fishing float invites you directly into the regenerative, spring-like quality of life with its lovely sparkling, yet partially eclipsed notion of 'Spring Jade'. Notice how, in photo #1 and #3, this wonderful 3-piece molded glass float keeps its secrets enshrouded in the basal area with a light 'frosting' to the glass, while the northern portion opens up to the light - indeed reflects the light - with its hand-whittled 'dappling'. The 'dappling' is a result of the hand-whittled marks from the wooden mold into which the glass was poured, while the 'frosting' results from decades of sand-blasting under ideal conditions.

Spring Jade measures a few hairs more than 3-3/8" diameter or 10-7/16" in circumference. It's the size of a small to medium orange, often referred to by collectors as standard 'base ball' size for quick reference. The beauty in this piece is both subtle and stand-out, revealing sunny and misty days! The gorgeous whittle markings from the hand-cut wooden molds sparkle and create a depth of texture found only in the genius of this design - forever a favorite of mine!

This is a 2nd generation (Post-WW II) Korean or Japanese 3-piece molded glass fishing float. The seal 'button' on this three-piece float shows the typical 'umbilical' type surround indentation near the outermost edge of the seal. The seals are mostly uniform and nicely crafted in the 2nd generation of 3-pc molded floats.

You may study the seal in photo #5 to see how beautifully crafted it is. This seal button is lightly 'textured' by a sealing iron. It is believed the better Japanese glass blowers or master blowers used to 'texture' their seals. This one is like a beautiful old label bearing legends and tales we can only imagine. A slight bit of irregularity can be seen outside the 'umbilical' seal at around the 10 to 11 o'clock position (photo #5). This had to have been part of the creation of the seal. The entire surround edge is smooth to the touch of a finger tip with no chips, or rough grazed edges. The seals are wonderful 'artifacts' bearing much history, a bit like an archaeology dig!

Each side of the southern hemisphere of Spring Jade shows a lovely, clear mark in the form of '+'. It can be viewed in photos #1, #3 and especially in photo #5. These particular marks, often called 'hash' marks, most often appear in the form of simple Roman numerals such as I, II, III, IV. These were used primarily as a means of matching the lower two halves in the process of production. Other more obscure marks were occasionally used. It's not often I see one with a '+' mark (on each side) and this is a nice clear strike mark!

The 3-piece molded floats will always be a collector's favorite due to the amazing craftsmanship and care that went into hand-whittling the wooden molds into which the glass was poured. The construction is exquisite when you think they were made for work at sea! You may know someone in your life who is a '+' in which case the gifting of Spring Jade may be a real treasure.
