I collected this plate on one of my visits to Sky City, the pueblo of the Acoma people over 20 years ago. This piece is made in the traditional way. The clay is collect from sources near the mesa. In preparing the clay ancient pottery shards are ground to dust and included in the clay, therefore each piece contains the work of their ancestors. This plate was made using the coil method. The image is Kokipelli, known as a fertility god, prankster, healer and story teller. Kokopelli embodies the true American Southwest, and dates back over 3,000 years, when the first petroglyphs were carved. Although his true origins are unknown, this traveling, flute-playing Casanova is a sacred figure to many Southwestern Native Americans. Kokipelli is featured in the center and around the rim of this plate. Circling around Kokipelli are eagle feathers. Signed on the back - Acoma "Sky City", N.M., K.G.S. with an image of the Sky City mission. This piece is hand painted with minerals also collected from the area and painted with yucca brushes the artists make themselves. This pot measures 6 inches across and is 1.5 inches tall.
