Ike's fleece is a fun mix of dark and medium brown spots on a creamy white background, or is it white spots on a dark background? It could be described as an Oreo cookie fleece -- or maybe it's a calico fleece, with dark brown, medium brown and cream colors. Spinning it would result in a lovely variegated yarn as the brown and cream colors blended into each other depending on which lock of wool you are spinning.

Since Ike is a wether, his fleece has characteristics more like a ewe than a ram. The handle is very soft. Although this year's fleece has not been tested yet, Ike's fleece last year tested at 26.5 microns average fiber diameter. I have heavily skirted Ike's fleece to remove areas that had VM, so it's a bit smaller at 3.4 pounds, and priced at $18/pound.

On a sheep farm, a wether like Ike is sometimes considered to be a waste of feed, since he can't make new lambs. But Ike has an important role on our farm, as a nanny! (Don't tell him, he would be embarassed by that word.) When we select a new ram lamb to keep on our farm and join the ranks of the working rams, that young lamb is too small and immature to live with the big rams during his first winter with us. So young rams live with Ike over their first winter. Since he is not as big or as bossy as the grown rams, Ike serves as a mentor who can show the young boys the ropes, as they grow and find their place among the ram flock. Besides, Ike is a sweetie with his big brown eyes, and he loves getting neck scratches. We like Ike, and he's very likable!
