We either find these quahog shells on the beach, or we have eaten the clams :)

The purple quahog shell has been cut, carved and used for adorning clothing, making jewelry, and ceremonial pieces by the Wampanoag people, for many many years.

This Wampum Eagle Feather was completely hand made, by me. Sawed, carved and polished by hand. I have semi-polished the back of this feather, to show the deep purple growth rings.
I have not drilled a hole in this Feather yet. If you would like a hole, please let me know and I can drill it, and add a sterling jump ring if you would like. As is, it would be great for use in a medicine bag, or as a pocket totem.
This is a very deep purple shell, with growth rings throughout. You can see the rings along the side of the feather in the last photo.
This feather is 2 inches long, and about 3/8 inch wide.

We are not Wampanoag, though I grew up in the area where the purple Quahogs live, and learned to carve the wampum shell while I was fairly young.
Working with the quahog shell is something I still enjoy very much, so you will find new wampum carvings here when I can. I love the smell and feel of the shell. Since we eat the clams, we also make beautiful things from their shells, with respect and thanks to the clams and the ocean.
