This kitschy trivet was a souvenir of Niagara Falls, Canada. The graphic features the text "Niagara Falls", written in a cool retro font. Also featured is the Skylon Tower (thank you, Wikipedia!), which is an observation tower on the Canadian side of the Niagara River. The tower overlooks both the American Falls in New York State, as well as the larger Horseshoe Falls in Ontario, Canada. Built in 1964, it opened in autumn 1965, and features three outside mounted elevators, an observation deck, and two restaurants at the top, one of which revolves in a full circle once an hour. Sounds like fun, we want to go there!
The colors include yellow, a reddish orange, green, blue, and white. The cast iron or metal frame, in the shape of a teapot, has an interesting floral pattern engraved in it, with dots for the flowers and scrolling vines.
The trivet can be used to keep hot items off of the counter, or hung on the wall for decoration. It has four feet on the back to elevate it off of your table or counter. There is a hole in the top for hanging.
Measurements are 7" across (including the teapot frame's handle and spout), and 6" tall. Just the ceramic tile is 4 1/4" by 4 1/4" square. This trivet is in good vintage condition (there is a tiny chip in the upper left corner of the ceramic tile; however, it is barely noticeable and does not take away from the appeal of the piece). The tile is clean and shiny and the graphics really pop. The ceramic tile is marked on the back with Asian lettering; the metal is marked on the back with "Taiwan".
