This friendly lion, wearing flowers in his mane, looks like he just stepped out of a classic Saturday morning cartoon; judging by his slightly goofy expression, you half expect him to start uttering wisecracks. Made of handpainted earthenware, he exudes funky early-1970s flair - that unmistakable combination of irreverence and innocence, mixed with a little leftover 1960s spirit.

He's nicely detailed, and the color palette of browns, beiges, rusts and soft reds is strikingly set off by the black base. Turn him around, and you discover that he was designed as a decidedly quirky pencil holder: there are three pencil slots above his tail. (They're obviously meant for traditional wood pencils; other writing instruments will fit, as long as they're on the skinny side.)

There's a maker's mark impressed into the bottom, but we haven't been able to make it out. The copyright date of 1972, on the other hand, is perfectly clear.

Of course, you can feel free to ignore his functional side altogether, and display this king of the beasts as a purely decorative piece - he's guaranteed to get you smiling.
