Squiddy Thing - SIGNED ORIGINAL-
India Ink, gouache, watercolour, on Artcare 100% cotton board, unframed
4" x 20"

**I use only Professional Artist's grade archival paints, ink and boards. The colours I use are all of the highest rating of permanence, so they will not fade when properly framed, out of direct sunlight. I use ArtCare 100% Cotton Rag Conservation Boards and Arches 100% Cotton Rag Cold-press (significantly textured) Watercolour Paper. Both are conservation quality. My studio and home are smoke-and-airborne-chemical-free.**


This squiddy thing is inspired by my children's interest in oceans and oceanlife. Watching the BBC's Blue Planet over and over and over and over (........), it was bound to seep into my mind and then seep back out. Truthfully, Blue Planet is one of my favourite series ever, so maybe *I* made *them* watch it over and over and over... Who can tell?


I created my ink painting method serendipitously one evening when I had for the first time successfully put my newborn infant and his toddler brother to sleep, and didn't know how much time I'd have before they woke up. So, I grabbed the most immediate supplies available from my art bins, which happened to include a giant jug of India Ink, a pile of cotton rag board off-cuts from framing I'd done previously, and a dental syringe, which I had from my wisdom tooth extraction.

Since then, I have created well over 100 finished works in this style and method, many of which are now in private collections.

My ink paintings are all originals, never digitally reproduced. I have no intention to reproduce them this way, so the only memories I will have of these one-of-a-kind paintings are in my mind and as photographs taken with my camera in my studio.

The surface of the ink is varied, from shiny and slightly raised, to soft and absorbed by the cotton board. This texture gives a liveliness to the works that is not captured digitally, but is apparent in-person, and one of my favourite reasons for using this ink in this way. It has a slightly sculptural effect, different than a brush stroke, but just as inviting to the eye. The raised effect of the ink and the use of gouache (which picks up skin oils, leaving an indelible mark), also require some consideration in framing; the piece should never be rubbed, or touch glass- always spaced slightly away from it with matting or glass-spacers (professional framers will do this without special instructions). Please handle the piece by the edges, and leave it in its archival sleeve (included) until it is ready to be framed.

I have included a description of the work, biographical information, and a tag with each piece, which is wrapped in an archival sleeve to protect it while it awaits framing.
