Vintage WWI Postcard German Fold Out Folder, Early 1900s Montabaur by Musterschutz und Auslandpatente

The rare vintage postcard from Germany, dating to around 1917, is a fold-out postcard, or folder, with a view of Montabaur, Germany, on the front. Published by Musterschutz, the postcard was sent from Germany by an American private during World War I. The image in front has a flap in it, with a sliding metal knob to hold it closed. When you open it, there's a long fold-out page with 12 small photographs of German countryside, with captions in German. The scenes includes rivers, small towns and churches, bridges, and fields.

The cover shows the hillside and castle in Montabaur. It's labeled Westansicht, which means Western view. The back is labeled Drucksache (printed matter) and Musterschutz und Auslandpatente (Musterchutz is the publisher; Auslandpatente means foreign patents). It's addressed to Julia and starts "This leave[s] me fine and dandy hope you are the same." The signature is hard to read but says Pvt. Jas. H. Gregory, ?? 1st Div., A.P.O. 729 A.E.F., c/o Maj. J.M. Miller (?). It was sent through military post so has no stamp.

The postcard is in fair condition. The outside has some stains and yellowing and some wear around the edges. The inner foldout is somewhat yellowed but much lighter and with no tears. The postcard has built up sides and a separate sheet of paper on the back glued to the front (to accommodate the foldout), and it is loose on one side but still holding together well.

Though it's not in perfect condition, this is quite an unusual and fascinating find.
