Maine Beautiful indeed! As the Mainer in this partnership of antique lovers, I can attest to the truth of this title. The author begins: "The State of Maine is so beautiful, and its wealth of scenery shows such a variety and has such a wide appeal, that the avid American mind will not easily be satisfied with any amount of illustration of the theme." The author dedicated the book to his father, Albion Nutting: "A Native of Maine and a Lover of Beauty." In Maine, I think, we are all lovers of beauty, native or not.

This is the original 1924 edition of this book, which is part of the States Beautiful Series, which at that time included books on Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine. In preparation at that time were Florida, Pennsylvania and New York. The Publisher was the Old America Company out of Framingham, MA. The publisher describes its volumes this way:

"Bound in full cloth, gold stamping on the recto and shelf back, with Cameo Art print jacket. 304 illustrations. 304 pages. Each volume $4.00 post paid."

This book is loaded with fantastic black and white photos (no color in 1924...) and pen & ink style illustrations of every imaginable place in Maine. Also included are detailed narratives and poems. Here's an excerpt of a poem by Mildred Hobbs: "Cool curves of beaches smile among the boulders, While, mile upon mile, out of the sea, The mountains rear their heads and green-clad shoulders." Ok, so it's not Edna St. Vincent Millay, but...it's picturesque poetry.

If you live in Maine, wish you lived in Maine, visit Maine or just love Maine, this is a classic book that belongs in your library. This copy is in very good condition.
