It was a frumpy grumpy looking fellow in the original portrait that inspired this one of Daniel Bullworth. When I saw the original portrait, I thought it perfect for an English Bulldog. Such a fun breed to put in clothes; Just say "sit pretty for your portrait" and see what you get!

The name? Well English Bulldogs are perhaps most revered at Yale University, where they made a member of the breed their sports teams mascot in 1889 and called him Dan. He was the first live mascot in America and probably the world. Over the years, there have been seventeen "Dans" and the descriptive "Handsome" was added more recently. I'd like to think this Dan here is handsome and smart enough to hold a high position at Yale.
