A rare & very exciting opportunity to own a complete set of Miguel Berrocal Minis:
Miguel Ortíz y Berrocal (September 28, 1933 – May 31, 2006) was an artist known for his puzzle sculptures. He was born in Villanueva de Algaidas, Málaga, Spain, and married Maria Cristina de Bragança (the daughter of Portuguese throne pretender Maria Pia de Saxe-Coburgo e Bragança). He received formal training in mathematics, architecture, chemistry, and art. Berrocal ran a foundry in Negrar near Verona, Italy.

The sculptures of Miguel Ortiz Berrocal may be found in art museums, galleries, and private collections around the world. Berrocal is best known in the puzzle community for his sculpture “multiples,” signed and numbered limited editions typically consisting of many ingeniously interlocking metal elements. The mix of science & art inherent in his work makes Berrocal one of the most unique & intriguing artists of the 20th century. The numerous mechanisms employed throughout Berrocal’s work are works of art in themselves. Each set was issued in an metal edition of 6 in solid gold, 500 in sterling silver, & 9500 in nickel silver. Each sculpture is in the original box, accompanied by a wonderful book of numbered diagrams detailing disassembly and reassembly of the sculptures: all contain a wearable ring.

The six "Mini" sculptures are Mini Zoraida, Portrait of Michèle, Mini Maria, Mini David, Mini Cariatide, and Cristina:

Mini Zoraida
23 Elements; Nickel plated; 78 x33 x45 mm; 1969-70: Edition # 4309/9500:
Mini Zoraida is a 23-element sculpture of a reclining woman resting on a black base. An homage to Paloma Picasso, the elements are nickel plated with the exception of the breasts which appear to be rose quartz cabochons and form the setting for a ring contained within the sculpture. The right foot is a key which unlocks the sculpture.

Portrait of Michelle
17 Elements; Nickel plated; 66 x 74 x 51 mm; 1969: Edition # 04437/9500 (please note not # 4477 as mis-transcribed on the box):
Portrait of Michéle is a 17-element chrome sculpture resting on a black base. The eye contains an aquamarine in white enamel and forms the setting for a gold-plated ring contained within the sculpture. Portrait de Michéle can also be used as a head for La Menina II or La Totoche.

Mini Maria
22 Elements; Nickel plated; 43 x 80 x 38 mm; 1968-69: Edition # 03786/9500
Mini Maria is a 22-element sculpture resting on a black base. Five of the chrome elements comprise a phallus extending the length of the sculpture and penetrating the finger ring with a moonstone cabochon contained within the sculpture. The testicles of the phallus form the buttocks of La Mini Maria.

Mini David
22 Elements; Nickel plated; 54 x 100 x 36 mm; 1968: Edition # 9238/9500 (please note not P238 as mis-transcribed on the box):
Mini David is Berrocal's most popular sculpture. Each of the 22 elements is nickel-plated with the exception of the gold-plated finger ring containing not only the genitalia (visible) but also a green agate gemstone (hidden).

Mini Cariatide
26 Elements; Nickel plated; 130 x 63 x 33 mm; 1968-69: Edition # 8931/9500:
Mini Cariatide is composed of 26 elements. The pubic triangle is actually a gold heart, contrasting beautifully with the nickel plate of the remaining elements and forming the setting for a finger ring contained within the sculpture.

25 elements; Nickel plated; 96 x 62 x 37 mm;1969: Edition # 2028/9500:
Cristina is a 25-element sculpture. Each element is plated in nickel with the exception of the finger ring bearing Berrocal's monogram in gold on a white enamel background, the setting of which is easy to spot.
