Black walnut has long been treasured for its durability and rich, lustrous grain patterns. This wooden salad bowl is made from a solid piece of figured walnut.

Measuring 13" wide by 4¼" deep, it has a generous size to feed a large group of dinner guests. I wanted to let the spectacular figured grain be the focus of this piece and therefore left the shape simple. The depth of the grain, particularly inside the bowl, is wonderful. For a finish, I used walnut oil, a non-toxic, food-safe finish which is hard and durable. Walnut oil will not wash or wear away like beeswax or mineral oil finishes. Maintenance is simple. Wash by hand in warm soapy water and dry by hand.

I do not get access to very much black walnut but when I do, I take full advantage of it! On of the arborists who supplies me with timber told me about a dead tree he had been tasked to remove. He cut much of the trunk into slabs for furniture making but had a few odd-ball pieces left over. He thought they would end up being firewood so I think this will be bit of a shock to him. :)

This salad bowl would make a perfect wedding gift or Christmas gift for the foodie in your life.

Thank you for looking.
