This is a small decorative porcelain bowl. It would make a very dynamic candy dish or could be used simply a cereal or soup bowl. It is also a chawan for the Japanese Tea Ceremony. The interior is black and the exterior surface has a wonderful tactile quality and in my experience, people are drawn to pick it up and feel the surface. It is porcelain thrown on the wheel and electric fired. There are layers of decoration on the exterior of the bowl. After trimming the foot, and after drying, the outside was painted with black terra sigillata (a very fine colored slip) and burnished and then a resist was painted by hand and the unprotected areas were etched away with water. This technique was repeated a second time, then finally black slip was painted into the etched out areas. For a more extensive description of this technique, one can go to http://jimgottuso.wordpress.com and click on the article in the right column that was recently in Pottery Making Illustrated magazine. The interior is black glaze and the exterior is a transparent yellow glaze. Dishwasher and microwave safe, LEAD FREE glaze. It's dimensions are 5 inches in diameter and 4 inches tall.
