Vintage but new as in never used. Made by a grandmother with fabric left over from little girls jumpers or coveralls. The blanket stitching is hand done, the binding is hand hem-stitched and there is both a little bit of hand quilting and machine quilting outlining the elephant and zebra. The lion is very low pine terry cloth. He looks quite astounded to find himself on a pot holder. The elephant is 7.75 x 7.5 inches, the zebra is about 7 x 9.25 inches, and the lion is about 8.75 inches square. I don't know what was used for the interior batting, my guess would be sheeting or toweling. they are too thin for it to have been quilt batting, and besides, in my experience in the 1950s country women didn't use commercial quilt batting, they more likely used old blankets and sheets.
