This Coif is designed to recreate the typical cut work coif of the Elizabethan era. The cutwork is replicated by insertions of lace. The design is based on research into existing coif designs, and the structure of the coif is based on the information presented in Janet Arnold's
Patterns of Fashion 4 on page 46 and 103. The cut work coifs are inspired by a beautiful example in the collection of the embroiderer's Guild of Great Britain, EG 158, dated c.1600.

The coif is made of a linen fabric. The finished coif is washable, and can be ironed from the inside with a press cloth to protect the lace. Treat as a delicate washable. The lace is a cotton or rayon lace. The coif may need to be bleached to prevent yellowing. Starching is recommended.

I have created a handout explaining the proper wearing and use of the coif. Please write if you would like to recieve a copy.
