This collection of authentic Hawaiian Puka shell are a valuable sea gem gathered along the shores of Kauai.

How a Puka shell comes to be begins with a complete shell.

The shell of a cone snail is cone-shaped, and closed at the larger end. When the dead shell is rolled by the waves in the surf and coral rubble, the narrow end of the shell breaks or is gradually ground off, leaving the more solid top of the shell intact.

Given enough time, 40-80 years, the tip of the spire of the shell usually also wears down, and a natural hole forms from one side to the other. This shell fragment is a sort of a natural bead, and is known as a "puka". Real puka shells are not flat: one side of the bead is slightly convex, the other concave. The concave side of the bead clearly shows the spiral form of the interior of the spire of the cone shell.

All the holes of these shells occurs naturally as my shells are never drilled or otherwise mechanically altered and only tumbled by the ocean. This color is VERY RARE! Used as an accent in a string of white shell to make that special unique necklace.

This lot has just 8 shell with natural hole. They range in size from 1/2-1/4 inch across. Please see photo with USA Quarter to get a visual on size.

Shells pictured are an example of size and shape exact of purchase. Color may vary with different monitors.
