Very sweet cover of flowers and leaves on this delightful book by George William Curtis (1824 - 1892). It has been described as a pleasantly sentimental, fancifully tender and humorous study of life for the time in which it was written.
In good condition considering age, cover has some wear. There is a tear on the title page where it has stuck to the author's photo opposite it. See second photo. There is a previous owner's name, Miss Lucy F. Hoy, Urbana, Ill neatly written inside both the front and back fly leaves. The title page is pulled away a bit from the page with the author's photo and signature. (I don't know if this is a real signature or stamped. Appears to be in ink.) Has a dedication to Mrs. Henry W. Longfellow.
Great book for reading and a collector.
Hurst and Company, Publishers New York Book was written in 1856. I don't know the date of this edition.
