A rainbow wind chime with seven glass wands hanging from a length of Oregon driftwood.

Seven shiny wands of colored glass hang from a piece of driftwood gathered on the Oregon Coast. Each has subtle stripes at the bottom ends giving them a rippled appearance.

I created a hanger consisting of a loop of brass cable, with a straight piece of brass cable attached to that with a brass loop attached at the top end for hanging the chime, with three sets of rainbow glass beads. I wrapped the driftwood with brass wire near each end.

The glass wands range from 3 inches to 6 inches long (7.6 to 15.2 cm). The driftwood is 8 1/2 inches long (21.6 cm). The overall length, including the hanger, is 18 inches (45.7 cm). For stringing the wands I used a very strong, synthetic cord which is resistant to the UV rays in sunlight.

The varied lengths of the wands results in different tones, creating a more complex sound.

My chimes are durable, but if you hang them outside, they will do best under a roof or overhang, and it might be a good idea to take them down in high winds or rough weather so they don't blow off the hook you hang them on.

People are naturally curious about the durability of glass in wind. I take extra care with the glass pieces to keep them strong. I have had them out in heavy winds on the Oregon Coast without breakage, and I've gotten no reports over the years of any problem. Of course, glass can break, so I recommend taking them down during high winds. Be sure to hang them securely so they cannot fall of the hook they are hung on, and place them so they won't bang into any hard surfaces, and don't drop them.
If you would like your order sent to a different address than your own, please temporarily change your ship-to address. Otherwise if I need to change the address, there could be additional charges, because shipping is calculated based on location. I am happy to enclose a gift card: just let me know what you would like written on it. I enclose a packing slip with each order which does not include prices.
