WHAT THE HECK IS THAT STUFF ON MY FRENCH BULLDOG'S NOSE?

Probably not food, dirt, bad genetics or anything you did or didn't do that you should have (did that make sense?). While your French Bulldog may have a bit of dryness on their nose, if it is more of a crust or looks like an oyster shell or tree root, your Frenchie may have Nasal Hyperkeratosis aka crusty nose crud.

Nasal Hyperkeratosis is an idiopathic condition (scientific jargon for they don't have a clue where it comes from) that results in a protein or keratin overgrowth (keratin-more jargon) on a dog's nose and/or paw pads. This protein overgrowth is often seen in older dogs, dogs with certain illnesses or on some medications. Plus, certain breeds or breed types (mixed breed dogs get this too) seem to have a genetic predisposition to the condition. Bully breeds, flat-faced dogs, toy breeds, the mastiff types and anything with a chunky body type seems to be more likely to have this condition. Yeah, Frenchies fit several of those criteria!

By the way, the handsome brindle Frenchie on the label is CH. Jackpot! Money Money Money, CGC, ROM. He was awarded the very FIRST Registry of Merit Award from the French Bulldog Club of America and he sired the FIRST Frenchie with OFA Excellent tested hips. Thank you for allowing my to share sweet Money's accomplishments.

Q: HOW DO I APPLY NOSE BUTTER®?

A: NOSE BUTTER IN TINS

Open the tin
Scoop a bit out appropriate to the size of your dog’s nose
Dab it on their nose. Tah Dah!
You do not have to rub it in, it will melt
Distract to keep them from licking (see below)
Repeat 2-3x a day for 1-3 days or until nose is back in shape
Then use as needed for maintenance (usually 1-2x a week)

A: NOSE BUTTER IN TUBES

Point the tube away from their eyes
Swipe across the top of the nose. About as much as a light swipe of lipstick (men-imagine it)
Distract to keep them from licking (see below)
Repeat 2-3x a day for 1-3 days or until nose is back in shape
Then as needed for maintenance (usually 1-2x a week)

DISTRACT! DIVERT! BEFORE, DURING & AFTER

Give a cookie or treat
Feed their dinner (with extra yummies)
Give them their favorite toy
Play with them for a bit
Go for a walk

Distraction is the key! Cookies always distract me, so a treat may be best. Yum, now I want a cookie.

French Bulldog Facts & a Bit of History

French Bulldogs were bred to be a woman’s companion and they live up to that heritage. In the late 1800s, English Bulldogs were often bred in a Toy variety, many were not much over ten pounds! They had a variety of ear-sets – rose, bat and prick. With the Industrial Revolution, many lace workers immigrated to France, taking the little bulldogs with them. There they crossed the dogs with Pugs, terriers and other small breeds, creating the early French Bulldog. Frenchies became the darling of society and were often seen on the arms of prostitutes as they walked the boulevards of France. As is often the case, fashion traveled upwards and the wealthy soon clamored to have this charming little dog. Many were exported to the United States, where the bat ear was “set” by American enthusiasts.

In 1897, the first French Bulldog Club of America specialty show was held at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel in New York. Frenchies were all the rage! As many know, a French Bulldog was lost on the Titanic and a Frenchie, Ortino, was the beloved pet of one of the daughters of the Russian Royal family. His remains were found where the entire family was executed.
