If you would like a custom-made Russian-style or Tibetan-style support spindles, we'd be glad to make one for you! Woods that we normally stock are: apple, oak, maple, mahogany, walnut, tigerwood, zebrawood, Cocobolo, rosewood, black & white ebony, lacewood, quilted maple, curly maple, curly rosewood, black locust, cherry, Verawood (related to Ironwood, or lignum vitae), and box elder. If you would like another type of wood, convo me, and I'll see if we can get it for you! The photos are only examples of items we've made in the past - they're made of the following woods: rosewood shaft with B&W ebony whorl 2-piece Tibetan (Please Note that these 2-piece spindles cost a bit extra, usually in the $30 range, due to the extra time on the lathe), rosewood Russian, tigerwood Russian, Bubinga Tibetan (the bowl costs extra), and a rosewood shaft Tibetan with 2-piece construction using tigerwood (again, these items cost a bit more, and the bowl is not included in the spindle price) (these items are already sold, but can be reproduced, if you'd like). We can also make spindle bowls to match your spindle for an additional fee (both ship in the same box for one shipping fee).

*PLEASE NOTE: If you'd like a 2-part spindle and whorl combination (where the whorl is a separate piece of wood and is press-fit onto the shaft), please convo us for pricing - these tend to be a bit more expensive, as they take longer to make. We always send you photos for your approval before shipping, and have a 100% guarantee - if you don't like it, we'll change it, or refund your money!

My husband and I makes these on our midi-lathe and mini-lathe, and they're finished with Danish oil and friction polish on the lathe. If you prefer a wood stain, we have stains, dyes, and Danish oil with stain. These products can darken the grain on lighter-colored woods, such as apple and oak. Since the finished grain is quite slick due to the lathe finishing, if you'd like grooves at the top of your spindle, that can also be done, to help hold your half-hitch in your thread. Or, you can simply use light sandpaper to "scuff" up the wood a bit on the top of the shaft, if you prefer a more open grain. If you prefer a totally unfinished spindle, we can do that for you, as well!

Sizes can also be custom-designed - most people seem to prefer support spindles from 9" - 12" in overall length, and from 0.5 - 1.5 ounces in weight. Heavier woods, such as Verawood, are difficult to work into a lighweight spindle, though, so we can help you discuss how your favorite woods will work with a particular spindle style.

All spindles are made and stored in a smoke-free environment. 100% guarantee! Once we make your spindle, I'll send you photos - if you don't like it, no problem, we'll either re-design it, or refund your money!
