This is a wonderful carved wooden elephant with an especially jolly expression, trunk lifted , perhaps in anticipation of some tasty bamboo shoots. This was purchased at a massive clear out of the historic Sawtooth studios, an art center for Berkeley since 1972. This is a Ganesha-style elephant- his left-hand trunk has broken off (Ganesha broke his off in order to write sutras with it). This is perhaps why the artist left it unfinished, there is a bit in back where his tail emerges where you can see the outside of the original block. Another odd flaw is a place on his back haunch where it looks as it he craving tool slipped, you can see the place in the first photo. Wonderfully expressive, energetic and muscular (look at the back in the fourth photo), this piece is 9 inches long, 5 inches high and about 4 inches deep.
