My series of six Old Beach prints is a memorial to the lush verdure and sometimes funky older structures of a particular moment in time. I pedaled my bike a couple streets over to get this sketch.

For ten years we lived in Virginia Beach, Virginia, on 19th Street. In the last months before we moved, bull dozers rumbled from the west end of the street, leveling houses and trees to expand the convention center. Pile drivers pounded on the east end for a taller, wider hotel which promised to block the ocean breezes that previously shared our front porch.

Change was constant. Houses in our Old Beach neighborhood disappeared to be replaced with apartment blocks or commercial structures. Others saw their roofs torn off and one or two more stories piled on, or additions sprout from the sides and consume the yards. The demands of the automobile and the tourism industry continued to squeeze the neighborhood.

Each composition required just one piece of wood, with new areas cut away between each color. (reduction method) They are hand printed. There will be some variations between prints.

This is unframed. The image size is 12.25" x 16" on heavy paper. Signed and numbered 3 in an edition of 9.
