Bronze is enjoying a renaissance and I, for one, am enamored with it. It's an alloy of copper and tin, so it's a lighter color than copper and slightly warmer in tone, resembling rose gold, which is so popular right now.

This necklace is from my Storied Past line. I made it with an authentic, hard-to-find 1897 10 centimes bronze coin. It was designed by Eugène André Oudiné, the revered French sculptor and engraver who also designed coins for the French mint. The face of French liberty, known as Marianne, graces the front of the coin. As the personification of the French Republic, various images of Marianne are all over France, in sculpture, postage stamps, currency, and art. The obverse feautres that most famous of French maxims: LIBERTE • EGALITE • FRATERNITE (Liberty-Equality-Fraternity).

To create a cameo effect and bring out the beauty of the coin, I've dapped (hammered into a dome shape), oxidized it to a dark finish, then polished the high relief areas to showcase the figurehead. Then I coated it with a special lacquer to protect the finish. It's actually very shiny. I had to heavily diffuse the lighting during photography to prevent hot spots from hiding the details.

Even with all this work, the coin is not perfect. It has been passed from hand to hand, and pocket to purse, for over a century, and its wear marks tell the story of its transit through time. Polishing the coin to perfect smoothness would make it look like a cheap reproduction, the kind you find on mass-produced jewelry.

The coin is supported by a large bronze jump ring and a sparkly 33-inch chain red brass chain that complements the coin. Instead of a clasp, which would only slide annoyingly to the front, I've connected the chain ends with a small jump ring. The chain slips easily over the head and the pendant hangs over the solar plexus, where it will express your cultural sophistication and individual style.
