A beaded collar made with bead embroidery and sculptural peyote stitch beadwork, this is a piece truly fit for a queen, a revolutionary, or a woman who isn't afraid to be who she is.

I created this piece as my entry in the Battle of the Beadsmith, an invitation-only beading competition held by the Beadsmith bead company, a major supplier of beads and beading supplies to bead shops throughout the United States.

Originally inspired by a piece of Hindu silver jewelry from a history book, this beaded necklace took on a life of its own as I stitched. As I worked, the themes of strong women came to my mind, and I spent time meditating on all the courageous women who have come before me so that I might enjoy the life I have now.

The women of today must still face battles every day. We battle for equality, for our rights to be heard as individuals who are more than just the sum of our parts. We battle for our families and for those we love. We battle for the Earth, the sky, the water. I created this bead embroidery collar as a tribute to uppity women everywhere who aren't afraid to speak their minds.

Mother of Dragons: Revolting Women was created by hand, one small bead at a time, as I stitched eleven sculptural peyote stitch structures to a base, and then worked traditional bead embroidery around them.

I chose Japanese seed beads to work with, in a variety of colors. The sculptural peyote stitch elements are created with a metallic hematite matte bead, and they are surrounded by rows of bead embroidery using matte grey beads lined with metallic bronze. Larger matte metallic bronze beads complete the embroidery, and transparent grey seed beads complete the color palette in the stitching along the edges.

After the bead embroidery was completed, the piece was cut out of the backing and attached to a brass collar blank. A smooth, supple backing of washable Ultrasuede was stitched in place with thousands of tiny stitches and more glass seed beads.

Adding movement to the whole piece, the fringe took more than six hours to complete. Combining glass bugle beads with seed beads, handmade Czech glass spike beads, and layers of metal chain, the beaded fringe on this OOAK beaded necklace hangs lightly against the collarbone.

The collar itself measures approximately 18" around, and is fastened by two brass hooks that attach to a set of vintage gold-tone buttons. The bead embroidery measures 1 3/4" high at the widest point; the fringe hangs down approximately 2".

Shipping is through United States Postal Service, unless other services are requested at time of payment. I will send this piece insured for the full value.

Please feel free to contact me with any questions you might have about this piece of beadwork, or if you'd like to discuss how I can create a piece of custom beadwork just for you.
