This soroban was acquired in Japan in the 1930's. Based on the fact that it is an older 1/5 style, it was constructed sometime between 1850 and 1930. It is constructed of solid wood with ebony beads and bamboo rods. There is an ivory or bone inlay that is missing one small piece below the top row of beads.

This abacus is in fully working order. It is an antique in fair condition with a few scratches and mars in the finish. There are kanji marks carved into the bottom of the piece that I am not able to translate.
