This is an original vintage 1959 Zoo Line teak wood Hippo figurine desk box.

Mr. Handsome here has four wooden legs, two wooden ears and a hinged set of eyes that move forward and back, for shielding his eyes from the sun and to accommodate his exceptionally wide-opening mouth. His mouth has two carved nostrils and it is hinged to open, revealing a desk box. He has two wooden teeth as well inside his mouth.

Measures 6 inches long by 3 1/2 inches high.

In excellent vintage condition, though missing its tail.

In the 50s the Los Angeles company Zoo-Line distributed a collection of animals that were made in Japan of teak and assorted woods. This line is associated with Kay Bojesan, though not actually one of his designs. The era is the same, however, as well as the artistic sensibility.
