A LARGE (9" tall) impressive half-gallon extremely DEEP PURPLE antique glass canning jar. This is NOT a reproduction, but an ORIGINAL100 year old fruit jar.

Jar is embossed on front, "Drey MASON".

This is a smooth lip jar (ca. early 1900) with a zinc lid that has milk glass insert.

Jar is in nice condition. Asides from interior content haze (which looks like it would soak out) it is in excellent condition, NO cracks, chips, dings, damage, etc.

About the lavender color ... The beautiful lavender/amethyst/purple color of this glass is a result of the presence of manganese in the glass, which was a decolorizing agent used to turn the glass clear. Exposure to ultraviolet rays of the sun or other sources of UV rays, triggers a chemical reaction and the minerals oxidize and turn a wonderful amethyst color. Some of my amethyst bottles and glass are purpled from years of exposure to natural sunlight and with a shed roof full of old bottles, they turn purple amazingly fast as we live at the 5,000' elevation. Others have been purpled with the use of strong UV lights in a box … and some have been purpled by running them through a sterilization process, a safe and permanent process which does the same thing as many years of exposure to natural sunlight, except much faster. To those "purists" who falsely believe that glass cannot turn this deep amethyst color on its own, I have several bottles that have turned this same shade of purple from being in the sunlight for many years as this is a naturally occurring process with antique clear glass. With few exceptions, only clear glass from before 1914 will turn sun-colored-amethyst. Not only does this deep purple/amethyst color make this a great looking bottle, but it also authenticates it as being truly antique!

99.9 % of these Drey jars are NOT even old enough to turn purple, yet look at this one, it is an absolutely stunning purple color! This is the earliest style of the Drey Mason jars. Notice how the zinc cap comes into contact with the shoulder? This is the older 'shoulder' seal jar, not the newer 'bead' seal. Also the newer Drey jars are embossed "PERFECT" Mason, whereas this one pre-dates the Drey "Perfect" Mason jars.

As antique bottle & jar collectors, this jar has been in our own personal collection for years but we have moved and just don't have the display space that we used to, so we have decided to sell. A totally beautiful antique jar, a large gutsy jar with wavy glass, swirls, whittle marks, it just comes to life when placed in a window or well lit area, almost surreal.
