As Summer starts to fade away and Autumn peaks around the corner, I get busy creating sugar skulls for the upcoming Dia De Los Muertos. Ever since I first heard of Dia De Los Muertos (Day of the Dead) so many years ago, I have been taken over by the beauty of these lovely little sugar skulls, and I make them every single year!

What exactly is Dia De Los Muertos? Well, it's a holiday traditionally celebrated in Mexico (and by people all over the world) on November 1st and 2nd - just after Hallowe'en. Contrary to the name, the celebrations held are actually quite beautiful and happy.

People often adorn their loved ones graves with their favourite possessions, foods, and flowers. Altars are also created in their honour, full of photos, candles, and sugar skulls.

A sugar skull is actually white sugar that has been pressed into a skull shape and dried until it is hardened. It is then decorated with vibrant royal icing and lovely findings such as feathers, rhinestones, sequins, glitter, and coloured foils.

Of course this brooch isn't made from sugar, but I would still consider it to be a sugar skull themed piece. Details and swirls have been hand-carved into the clay, as well as a few industrial inspired rivets. It has been painted in lovely brass and then a black patina is added to antique it, making it look worn. Throughout the design are vibrant splashes of metallic hues - especially in the many flowers and leaves adorning the top of the sugar skull.

It is meant to be worn as a brooch or pin, and would be lovely as the focal point pinned onto your clothing or bag. This brooch is the first of it's kind, and this is currently the only one available for now.

This brooch is about 7cm tall and is made from polymer clay. It has a silver tone pin on the back that is affixed with an industrial strength adhesive.

This piece is currently made and ready to be shipped. It will be shipped within 1-3 business days.

Your creations come snuggly wrapped in tissue paper and tucked inside of a little gift box. It is shipped in a recyclable padded kraft paper envelope. You only pay shipping for the first item you buy, so the more you buy the more you save on shipping.

Frequently asked questions about monsterkookies

My sculptures and chainmaille are not suitable for younger children, given their tiny parts and choking hazard.

My sculpted jewellery and figurines should be treated as miniature art sculptures, because that is exactly what they are.

Chainmaille bracelets and fidget toys are suitable for older children, given they are responsibly handled. Under extreme stress and use, fidget toys and bracelets can wear over a long period of time, however I am perfectly happy to repair it if need be.
