Carved Bilikin Little Demon Figure - Whale Bone ~Really Strange little Inuit bone carving.
This Bilikin is carved from a natural Mammalian growth, most likely made from a whale's bone, but carved to resemble a whale's tooth. Of course I suppose it may actually be a tooth too, since I have been told that a Whale or Walrus tooth is often used to carve these fetishes, and this material is readily available to the Inuit carvers. (it is quite solid) The patina is aged and beautiful.
This is a fat little Imp with a very mischievous grin. He has a big belly and long arms that drag the ground. He may be some sort of God Or Demon, I really don't know, but I find him utterly amusing. I think these odd little guys are thought to be "Good Luck!"
He is artist signed on the back side.
This carving has some nice detail and good shaping. It has been polished to a nice gleam. The bone has some great grain and a natural recess in the back which might make him nice to hold sticks of incense. It goes nearly all the way through to the base.
My photos have washed out detail, he is really quite well carved
This little fella would be great in a display or on a desk. He is really an object of interest and conversation starter.
Measures 3 1/2 inches Tall x 1 1/2 inches wide.
