'Star Portal' is one amazing hand blown antique glass fishing float. This lovely Japanese collectible has the aura and feel of a delicate jewel - it is not a tough 'rough neck' type float. Yet obviously it is proven as sturdy and just as enduring as a rough-neck! How 'Star Portal' survived the rigors and relentless challenges posed by decades of service at sea, yet retained it's delicate, refined beauty is part of the mystery of the ingenious invention proving to be not only a working tool for those who earned their living at sea, but also a fine piece of glass art.

This extremely pretty piece is lighter weight than most of the larger 'grapefruit' sized hand blown floats of this type, with the glass exhibiting a magnificent luminosity. Study the photos and look for the very pronounced, striated swirls in the glass, which is also loaded with the most refined champagne bubbling, you may imagine you're gazing through the net or 'grid' into the Milky Way or another galaxy.! There's one larger pretty bubble on top, amidst a wonderful swirling vortex or 'crown halo', but most are tiny and hardly perceptible unless the float is held directly to a light source, then you can almost taste the magic!

Star Portal measures 4-1/4" diameter (the glass by itself) or 13-1/2" in circumference including the width of its lovely, refined netting. The net is an authentic, original, twisted twine, type of string net, tight woven and sturdy enough in its time. It is natural fiber, 100% cotton, which is what was used waaaay back, until most were replaced with polyester in the 1950's and 60's. This net shows natural wear yet fortunately remains 100% intact. You will notice a light natural fraying of the ends here and there.

Notice some of the lovely swirling in photo #3. This swirling is gorgeous in real time, and especially around the 'crown halo' area. The float is absolutely luminescent in any type of light or setting, again resembling a 'jewel'.

The seal 'button' is beautifully formed, quite rounded and well placed. It's a good even thickness throughout as if masterfully formed with thought to detail. The surround edge is in MINT condition. There are no chips, no nicks, no grazing to the surround edge. The seal may be seen in photos #1 and #5. It is in terrific shape - a miracle considering most end up at least grazed, or nicked, even if only lightly. Star Portal seems far more a piece of art, rather than a working 'fished' float.

Note the float 'buddy' seen with Star Portal in photos #4 and #5. This is 'Dino Egg', a 2-1/2" diameter very old Korean float. Notice the big difference in size when measuring diameter. Compare Star Portal at 4-1/4" diameter. Little 'Dino Egg' is an 'extreme antique' from the 1920's and not part of this sale. You may see more of Dino Egg in the link below, if you wish:

Back to Star Portal, this marvelous piece in light teal blue-green, makes a beautiful companion. It simply glows endlessly, emanating beauty, calm and peace. If displayed near sunlight or a lamp, the netting will cast a fascinating shadow, as it's doing here next to me on the desk! Wish you could see the shadow. Star Portal is a treasure. Please give it the best home, then it on to posterity. These historical artifacts will never be made like this again.
