This fine art, hand pulled print titled "Purgatory", depicts a landscape of figures wandering on a beach. The print is printed on Rives BFK paper with grey printmaking ink using the relief printmaking technique woodcut. The image measures 22" x 36", and the paper measures 28.5" x 41.5." The print was created in 2003 and printed in an edition of 5 prints. Every print is signed and dated below the image in pencil, and is unframed.

In the woodcut technique, tools and chisels are used to gouge away white areas of the image in a sheet of poplar wood. The poplar wood sheet is then run through a professional printing press. The result is rich areas of a single color impressed into the paper.

This print is from a series of works titled "Digging" which explores digging as a metaphor for a search. Our compulsion to search and dig on both a literal and metaphorical level is a constant imperative which we experience daily. These searches occur on many levels, from short searches for material items to life long searches for desired states of mind. At the same time, digging also represents a wide range of topics, including excavation, history, burial, growth, and construction. In these images, I aim to create a sense of ambiguity in the figures so that they could represent the complexity and richness of this topic.
