Since the beginning, cultures around the world have had the desire to posses a tangible and personal form of worship, and these plaque style amulets reflect that desire. This particular amulet comes from the Indian state of Rajasthan and was made between the late 19th to early 20th century.

This pendant features a blessing written in either Hindi or Sanskrit. It's difficult to determine which because both languages are written in the same script and, more importantly, I don't read or speak either of them. However, after many conversations with locals visiting our store and much research we do know that they are indeed blessings and are meant to protect the wearer from evil spirits. These were often worn by children as they were believed to be the most in danger of harm (as is the belief in many ancient and present time cultures where there is a much higher infant mortality rate).

This pendant is made of of good coin silver (a traditional mixture of silver and other metals) and polishes very nicely. It has been stamped on a sheet of coin silver . The bail is in excellent antique condition with some wear at the top (as shown in the last picture).

You will receive the piece shown. It has been strung on a strong, black woven cotton finished off with a adjustable knot for instant adornment.

This piece is indeed antique and it's condition reflects that. Worn edges and weathering are a product of time and use...not defects.
